GINKGO (Ginko biloba)
Also known as Maidenhair tree. Constituents include gibberellin, cytokinin-like substances, ginkgolic acid, bilobol, ginnol, aspartine, calcium. Parts used are the nuts and the leaves.
Ginkgo is a very ancient herb, traditionally used in Chinese medicine and cuisine. The leaves stimulate circulation, so have a tonic effect on the brain, reduce lethary, improve memory, and improve one’s sense of well-being. The leaves of the ginkgo are sweeter, have a gentle effect, and are primarily used for cerebral circulation. Ginkgolides, unknown in any other plant, inhibit allergic response making this herb valuable in the treatment asthma.
Precautions are recommended for people taking blood thinners.
Precautions particular to the nuts, if you have poison oak, poison ivy, or contact dermatitis. Increased circulation may spread those toxins.
